Anticipated Funding Opportunities for Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24)

The FY24 Defense Appropriations Bill has not been signed into law. Although FY24 funds have not been appropriated for the Military Burn Research Program (MBRP), the MBRP is providing the information in this pre-announcement to allow investigators time to plan and develop ideas for submission to the anticipated FY24 funding opportunities. This pre-announcement should not be construed as an obligation by the government.

The FY24 Defense Appropriations Act is anticipated to provide funding for the MBRP to support advanced technology development to improve burn care outcomes. The managing agent for the anticipated funding opportunities is the CDMRP at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC).

The MBRP is providing the information in this pre-announcement to allow investigators time to plan and develop ideas for submission to the anticipated FY24 funding opportunities. The FY24 MBRP funding opportunity announcements for the following award mechanisms will be posted on the Grants.gov website. Pre-application and application deadlines will be available when the announcements are released.

Applications submitted to the FY24 MBRP must address one or more of the following Focus Areas:

  • Atypical Burns: Development and/or validation of methods to prevent, triage, and/or treat burns resulting from exposure to cold, radiation, directed energy weapons, or high-voltage/combat-related electrical injuries. Novel interventions that go beyond topical agents or dressings are of particular interest.

  • Burn Knowledge Products: Research to innovate best practices in the acute burn care continuum.

  • Burn injury-related complications: Development and/or validation of methods to prevent, assess, and/or treat burn injury-related complications, including:
    • Over/under fluid resuscitation to include limited or low-volume resuscitation
    • Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
    • Sepsis
    • Inhalation injuries
    • Peripheral neuropathy
    • Chronification of pain (prevention only)

Patient-Centered Research Award 		Investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent)
  • Bridges the gap between research, practice, and policy by building a knowledge base on which clinical best practices in burn care can be deployed to targeted populations at the appropriate time at the point of need.
  • Descriptive, observational, and experimental studies are allowed
  • Preliminary data required
  • Animal research is not allowed.
  • Pre-application submission is required; application submission is by invitation only.
  • Maximum funding of $2.2M for total costs (direct plus indirect costs).
  • Maximum period of performance is 4 years.
Technology/Therapeutic Development Award Investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent)
  • Intended to support the translation of promising preclinical findings into products for clinical applications.
  • Product-oriented (e.g., device, drug, clinical guidelines). The product(s) to be developed may be a tangible item such as a pharmacologic agent (drugs or biologics) or device, or a knowledge-based product.
  • Proof of concept demonstrating the potential utility of the proposed product, or a prototype/preliminary version of the proposed product, should already be established.
  • Preliminary data required.
  • Clinical research is not allowed.
  • Pre-application submission is required; application submission is by invitation only.
  • Maximum funding of $2.2M for total costs (direct plus indirect costs).
  • Maximum period of performance is 3 years.

A pre-application is required and must be submitted through the Biomedical Research Application Portal (eBRAP) at https://eBRAP.org prior to the pre-application deadline. All applications must conform to the final funding opportunity announcements that will be available for downloading from the Grants.gov website. The application package containing the required forms for each award mechanism will also be found on Grants.gov. A listing of all CDMRP and other USAMRDC extramural funding opportunities can be obtained on the Grants.gov website by performing a basic search using Assistance Listing Number (ALN, formerly CFDA) 12.420.

Submission deadlines are not available until the funding opportunity announcements are released.
